Russian Theatre Union

Theatre Union of Russia is a nationwide professional society in the performing arts, with its history dating back to 1877. Currently the Union is the umbrella organization for 75 local branches in different regions of Russia with a membership base of 25.000 individuals.

Overall, Russian Theatre Union’s activities aim at the comprehensive promotion of performing arts in Russia, which is attained via numerous professional training events, travel grants, study and research grants, dedicated programs of support to young theatre professionals, the co-organization of festivals and professional meetings, financial assistance, and other types of support to event organizers, specialized grants to stimulate artistic work and new productions.

The Russian Theatre Union established the Golden Mask – a national theatre award and festival, and till today the award procedures are under the administration of the Union. We provide continuous support and maintain several professional theatre magazines in the country; furthermore we run an open venue in central Moscow. Being a nationwide professional society, Russian Theatre Union is an active player in the formulation and realization of Russian cultural policy, aiming for the benefit of the whole performing arts sector.

Activities of the Russian Theatre Union are carried out via departments dedicated to different performing arts genres and forms – drama, opera, operetta, theatre for young audiences, puppet theatre, dramaturgy, and set design – each with their own annual action plan.

Russian Theatre Union is the umbrella organization for Russian national centres of international associations of AITA/IATA, ASSITEJ, OISTAT, and UNIMA, and is a member to IETM, ENICPA, and On-the-Move.org (OTM 2010+ Network).

Currently Alexander Kalyagin is the chairman of the Russian Theatre Union.
