ITI Germany

The German Centre of the International Theatre Institute is part of the International Theatre Institute/Institut International du Théâtre, the worldwide performing arts organisation founded in 1948 on the initiative of UNESCO. The goals of the ITI are to strengthen peace and international friendship through the exchange of knowledge and practice in all forms of the performing arts, and to promote mutual understanding and cooperation.

The ITI – German Centre develops projects in the fields of theatre and dance, cultural education, cultural heritage, cultural and creative industries. It is an information and documentation centre for the performing arts in Germany. In our network, over 200 theatre artists and representatives of associations and institutions are committed to the free development and preservation of the diversity of artistic expression.

The Media Library for Dance and Theatre

With currently around 12,000 videos and supplementary materials, the Media Library for Dance and Theatre is one of the most extensive publicly accessible audiovisual documentation centres for the performing arts in Germany. It documents developments in contemporary dance, theatre and performative production formats.

The ITI’s Media Studio working closely with the Media Library carries out the documentation of dance and theatre productions on film itself, which can also be viewed in the media library. The digitisation and preservation of the audiovisual as well as supplementary documents are also an important field of work in this area.

Together with artists and researchers the media library examines critically the documentation processes and formation of the canon in its collection. The media library is a site for discussion on artistic, cultural-political and technological developments in dance and theatre, and thus an intersection of archival, theoretical and movement practice.

With its digital platforms and digital projects the media library offers profound insights into artistic and cultural developments in the performing arts in detailed descriptions and thematically organised visual materials.
