Contredanse was set up in 1984 in order to support and stimulate choreographic creativity. The association was born out of the desire to bring Brussels-based dancers face to face with the big names in contemporary dance. It grew from a wish to provide the French-speaking community with a collective dance memory and to provide choreographers and dancers with tools and resources to enable them to link their studio work with an analysis of thought on movement, the body, composition, the history of dance, cultural policy, their rights, etc. It was founded on a desire to inform the public and dance lovers and from an aim to give researchers interested in dance ideas to explore and a documentation base. It grew out of a desire to build bridges between disciplines so that dance could become an area for inquiry and contemplation could have a place in dance studios.
